Mrs. Aubrey was away for 3 days this week, so we had an unusual week. Mr. D and Mrs. Sullivan were our substitute teachers and they both told Mrs. Aubrey that we are a great class. We got to pick some extra Bravo Bin prizes because we worked so well when Mrs. Aubrey was gone. On Monday we had photo day and everyone looked really spiffy. Mrs. Aubrey wouldn't have been in the group shot so we didn't get a class photo taken that day. Our class will have a group photo on retake day, Tuesday, November 4th. Mr. D was our teacher on Monday and Tuesday. He was fantastic! On Monday he taught us a new game called "Steal the Bacon" and then on Friday we taught the game to a Grade 2 class. When Mr. D was here we got to work in pairs on a healthy eating poster. Our task was to find pictures of food from all 4 food groups and find some photos of some sometimes food. When Mrs. Aubrey came back she asked us to "bump it up" by adding what we get from some of the foods we had chosen. Some of us added different vitamins to the fruit and vegetable group, fibre to the bread and grains group, calcium to the milk group and protein to the meat group. In Language our class read a really good story together, "My Buddy" and we worked on the reading skill of questioning. The story was about a boy in a wheelchair and his golden retriever working dog. We also read a poem that you might have read when you were a child. The title is "Something Told the Wild Geese", and we are memorizing parts of it and reading it together as a choral group. In Math we continued to work on our adding and subtracting skills. We practised subtracting numbers that had bigger numbers on the bottom in the ones column and the tens column (e.g. 340 - 78) We talked about regrouping and how we have to "go next store and borrow some more" so that we can subtract. Math Inquiry was also part of our Math lessons this week. In groups of two we worked on figuring out what a graph, with no labels and no title, might be about. It was amazing to hear all of the different ideas. It was also good practice for us to work on our listening skills. We had to listen to each group present and then make comments and ask questions. You had to be on the ball for that one! In Art we learned about background and foreground in a scene. Our supply teacher, Mrs.Sullivan, was surprised by how much we already knew about it. After we looked at some paintings we had to draw a scene of our own. Mrs. Aubrey heard that CJOH was looking for some more weather watcher drawings so that is what we worked on. We made a success criteria together (have a background and foreground, be realistic, display a type of weather, etc.) and then began our making our creations. You can them out under the "Our Work" heading of our website. French was also a lot of fun this week. We have been working hard in French and Mme. Danis is happy with our work. In Religion we worked together to make a prayer that will be read to the whole school at lunch time for the next 2 weeks. If you want to read our prayer you will find it under "Our Work". Soccer tag continues to be one of our favourite games. Everyone is running the whole time because if you are not running from an "IT" you are getting a pinny and becoming an "IT". So much fun, but we get really sweaty! Mrs. Aubrey was finally able to get our class registered on the Dreambox math website and we played a little of the game in class. It was a subitizing game. If you don't know what subitizing means ask your child. Hopefully they will remember. We also started to watch a movie about Terry Fox during our lunch break and we have been watching some hockey highlights during our morning snack break. We had fantastic weather this week so we had a lot of great recesses too. Hopefully this great Fall weather will continue into next week as we prepare for Thanksgiving.
