This week in Math we surveyed our classmates to answer some of our questions. After we finished tallying up our surveys we took the data and made bar graphs. We checked our success criteria to make sure that we included everything on our graphs (a title, labels, data transferred correctly from the tally chart). We found out lots of interesting information and we found out how to design better questions by using our "Bump It Up Wall". One student bumped up his question from "What is your favourite number?" to "What is your favourite number from 1 to 10?" By narrowing down the the category he was able to get better data. We also continued to talk about the MODE of data - the number that shows up the most often. We had fun finding the mode of our shoe sizes. We also did some patterning with a fun activity where we had to add 10 to different numbers on a hundreds chart to find a mysterious image. It was a great puzzle for us to figure out.
In Language, we have been working on making connections with what we have read. One of the stories we read was "A Weekend with Wendell" . After reading we discussed how Sophie could have used her W.I.T.S. to help resolve her conflicts with Wendell. Our Language lessons have also focused on reviewing important things like using capitals at the beginning of sentences and correct punctuation at the end. We also started writing compound sentences that use conjunctions (but, and, or, so, because) to join up two smaller sentences. We reviewed how to put a list of words into alphabetical order.
This week we have been soil scientists. At the beginning of the week we looked at some worms and we talked about how worms are important to soil. We also talked about how soil is made up of living and non-living things and we sorted things that you find in soil into these two different categories. Later in the week we dug up some soil in some different locations around the school. The soil samples were put into jars and labeled so that we could make some observations. After we recorded what the dry soil looked like we added water to the jars and then shook the jars. Shaking up the jars was very fun! We observed our jars again after 5 minutes and drew a diagram of what we observed. Mrs. Silva dropped in and our class made predictions of what they think the jars will look like on Monday.
In Religion, we have been talking about how we can share the gifts that God has given us with others. Our class did a lot of bucket filling this week. Our favourite team effort was teaching a Grade 2 class how to play the game Rockin Rollers. It was great to share one of our favourite games with another class. We also took a few moment to visit Theo's tree and say a few prayers. His tree has really grown a lot. You should stop by and see it sometime.
In gym we continue to work on soccer skills. We did some shooting drills during our outdoor gym on Monday and we play a fun game called 3 zone soccer on Thursday. 3 zone soccer really helped us work on our teamwork skills because we couldn't leave our zones so we had to pass the soccer ball to other people in other zones to move the ball down the gym towards the goal. It really got fun when Mrs. Aubrey threw a second ball in. We were all sweating by the end of gym period. In our gym classes we are also working on jogging for 8 minutes straight. We started at 4 minutes this week and we are going to add a half a minute each week as we work our way up to 8 minutes.
Other highlights of our week include our first Library visit on Thursday. We have a new librarian. Her name is Mrs. Cauley. She read us a funny story called, "Edwina, the Dinosaur That Didn't Know She Was Extinct. Our routine at the library has changed a little bit because now we get to scan out our own books! The first choir practice was on Tuesday. Mrs. Rowe (Ms. Ouellette got married :) and changed her name to Mrs. Rowe) had a good turn out of students from our class. Mrs. Rowe told us that if we missed the first practice we can still join the choir if we go this coming Tuesday. The school's first spirit day was on Tuesday. We earned 26 points for wearing blue, white and / or spirit wear. We had a Magazine Fundraiser assembly on Friday.
Our week was so busy that we didn't have time to write our whole blog. We brainstormed about our ideas for the blog and Mrs. Aubrey wrote it. Hopefully next week will be as busy and as fun as this week was. You can read all about it next Friday.
